Description
Your campaign has been sent and your contacts have opened it – so why isn't the campaign showing any statistics? This is where understanding the difference between an open and an implied open comes into play.
Why it's important
Understanding opens and implied opens is essential for optimizing your email strategy, and knowing the difference helps you make data-driven decisions with greater accuracy.
What is an "Open"?
An "open" is recorded on your campaign report when a recipient opens and downloads an image that is in your campaign. To accomplish this, the recipient must enable (display) all images in the campaign at once. Remember that the system records an open each time an image is viewed, which can record multiple distinct opens per recipient. Additionally, it should be noted that anti-spam filters can also record a series of opens, and this over a very short period of time as they check the integrity of links.
What is an "Implied Open"?
An "implied open" occurs when a recipient has clicked on one or more links in your campaign without actually viewing or displaying the images.
Best practices
Make sure to inform your contacts to always click to allow image display, and to avoid any issues, encourage them to add you as a safe sender. You can get a detailed report of "opens" by accessing your delivered campaign and clicking on the "Contact Activity" tab.
Troubleshooting
My open rates seem unusually low
- Check if your emails are image-heavy (images must load for opens to be tracked)
- Remind subscribers to enable image display in their email clients
- Look for high implied open rates (clicks without opens)
- Consider that privacy features in Apple Mail and others may block open tracking
I see multiple opens from the same recipient
- This is normal - opens are tracked each time images are viewed
- Anti-spam filters may generate multiple opens during analysis
- Recipients may forward emails or view them on multiple devices
- Consider unique opens vs. total opens in your analysis
Open rates suddenly changed dramatically
- Apple Mail Privacy Protection can inflate open rates
- Check if a major ISP has changed its image loading policies
- Verify that your tracking pixel is working correctly
- Review if your subscriber base has shifted to different email providers
How to improve open tracking accuracy
- Encourage subscribers to add you to their address book
- Use compelling preview text to encourage full email viewing
- Balance images and text for better overall engagement
- Focus on clicks and conversions as more reliable metrics
