# Creating Effective Preheaders
## Description

A preheader or preview text is a short snippet of text that appears under your subject line in many email clients, such as Outlook and Gmail. It's a preview of the information in your email.

## Why It's Important
When you send an email, one of the first things your recipients see is the preview text. As a result, it's important that this first impression is clear and inviting so that recipients are more likely to open your campaigns. The fact is you should take advantage of this resource; it can be considered the final shot to impress your readers in their inbox before they scroll, leaving your email campaign untouched.

## Best Practices for Preheaders

- **Keep it short**: Aim for 35-90 characters for optimal display
- **Complement the subject line**: Don't repeat it, but expand on it
- **Create urgency or curiosity**: Encourage opens with compelling preview text
- **Test across email clients**: Different clients display different lengths
- **Use actionable language**: Include verbs that encourage engagement
- Note that some email clients may not support custom preheaders

## Examples of Good Preheaders

- **Subject**: "New products just arrived!" **Preheader**: "Shop the latest collection before it sells out"
- **Subject**: "Your cart is waiting" **Preheader**: "Complete your purchase and save 15%"
- **Subject**: "Weekly newsletter" **Preheader**: "Industry insights, tips, and exclusive offers inside"

## Troubleshooting

**Preheader too long**

- Keep text under 90 characters for most email clients
- Test truncation points in different clients
- Put the most important information at the beginning
- Use ellipsis (...) strategically if needed

**Email client issues**

- Some older email clients don't support preheaders
- Gmail may pull additional text if preheader is too short
- Test across major email clients before sending
