# Managing Contact Lists

<Callout type="info" title="Plan availability">
 Number of audiences (lists) by plan: **Free** includes **1**, **Growth** includes **3**, and **Premium** is **unlimited**.
</Callout>

## Description

A contact list will contain the name and email address of each contact, as well as any other information you deem relevant. Your plan determines how many lists you can create: the Free plan includes 1, Growth includes 3, and Premium is unlimited.

## Why It's Important

By building a good and detailed contact list, you'll not only be able to distribute campaigns easily and securely, but you'll also be able to track the statistics they provide compared to your other lists.

## Step-by-Step Process
To create a new list, follow these steps:

<Stepper>

1. Go to **Audience** then **Contacts**

1. Click on the **gear wheel** on the right side of the page

1. In the option to choose a list to manage, click on the small arrow to display a dropdown menu

1. In this menu, select **New list**

1. Click on it and then you can name your list

1. After naming your new list, click **Save**

1. Select the **Attributes** tab to manage list attributes. See how to add one to a list here

1. Select the **Default sender** tab to specify which address this list should be sent from by default

1. Select the **Settings** tab to set the default language for the list

1. Select the **Redirect pages** tab to change the page people see when they subscribe or unsubscribe from this list. You do this by adding a custom URL

1. When finished, click **Save**
</Stepper>

## Duplicate Emails

Please note that multiple lists can have the same email address. It's important to note that a contact who is active in, for example, five lists will count as five contacts in your total contact count. We recommend using one list per language: this helps you keep all information about your contacts (history, campaigns received, clicks, etc.) in one place, so you don't have to pay for multiple rates. Segmentation within your list can help avoid this.

## One List, Several Segments

A campaign is sent to **one list**: you can't send the same campaign to several lists at once. You can, however, select one or more [segments](/en/docs/audience/creating-dynamic-segments) of that list in the campaign's recipient step.

That's why we recommend keeping your contacts in **one list** and organizing them with segments (built on tags, interests, or attributes) instead of creating a list for each group. You avoid paying for duplicate contacts, you keep each contact's history in one place, and you can still target each group separately. See [Tags, interests, or attributes: which one to use](/en/docs/audience/tags-interests-or-attributes).

## Troubleshooting

**Unable to create a new list**

- Check that you have a Growth or Premium plan
- Verify your plan's list limit hasn't been reached
- Make sure you have administrator permissions
- Try using a different list name without special characters

**Default sender won't save**

- Check that the sender email is authenticated
- Verify the email domain is verified
- Make sure the sender exists in your sender list
- Try setting up the sender address first

**Duplicate contacts across lists**

- Use segmentation instead of multiple lists
- Consider consolidating lists by language
- Export and deduplicate before importing
- Review your contact management strategy

**List settings won't update**

- Click "Save" after each change
- Check for validation errors
- Make sure all required fields are filled
- Try updating one setting at a time

**Custom redirect pages not working**

- Check that URLs are complete (include https://)
- Verify pages are publicly accessible
- Test URLs in a private browser window
- Make sure URLs don't contain spaces or special characters

**Can't access list management options**

- Confirm you're clicking the correct gear icon
- Check your user permissions for list management
- Try logging out and logging back in
- Clear browser cache and cookies
